ExxonMobil and Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) will invest $1.1 million in a project to electrify the administrative post of Quionga, in Palma district, Cabo Delgado province.
According to an official statement, the initiative was launched on Wednesday (29) at the town of Palma in a ceremony presided over by Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Estêvão Pale, accompanied by ExxonMobil’s country director for Mozambique, Johanna Boothey. Cabo Delgado Governor Valige Tauabo also attended the event.
The project envisages the construction of 25 kilometres of medium-voltage lines, four transformer substations, and 6.1 kilometres of low-voltage distribution network. The works also include the installation of 60 public street lighting poles and the connection of 600 new consumers to the National Electricity Grid. Completion is scheduled for February 2027.
During the ceremony, Governor Valige Tauabo stated that the arrival of electricity in Quionga addresses one of the local population’s most pressing aspirations and should drive the economic and social development of the region. According to the governor, access to energy will create better conditions for schools and health facilities, as well as facilitating the preservation and commercialisation of fish.
The electrification is also expected to stimulate other economic activities within the Quionga administrative post. Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Estêvão Pale said the initiative reinforces the government’s commitment to expanding universal access to electricity across the country.
ExxonMobil reiterated at the launch its willingness to continue supporting sustainable development projects in communities across Cabo Delgado province.
