ENH: Mozambique to Produce Over 900 Megawatts of Energy From Natural Gas By 2024

The National Hydrocarbons Company (ENH) has revealed that the country will produce more than 900 megawatts of energy from 2024, with the start-up of new natural gas power stations, especially the Temane Thermal Power Station, located in the district of Inhassoro, Inhambane province, southern Mozambique.

According to ENH’s CEO, Estevão Pale, this increase in production is intended to guarantee universal access to energy by 2030 for all Mozambicans, as well as positioning the country as an important player in the global energy security sector.

“The country’s existing natural gas plants are generating a total of 452 megawatts of energy, and with the start-up of new plants, this capacity will be increased and we will have enough energy to feed Mozambique and some countries in the SADC region,” he explained during the 8th Mozambique Gas & Energy Summit & Exhibition 2023.

Estevão Pale said that natural gas accounts for around 38 per cent of Mozambique’s energy matrix, pointing out that part of this resource is used by commercial and family consumers as a source of energy.

“We are all concerned about decarbonisation, and natural gas is an important energy source for the world and, given the challenges of development and the energy transition, it will continue to be an important energy source for many years to come,” he stressed.

Also during his speech, the CEO said that all estimates point to a probable growth in world consumption of energy generated through natural gas, a factor that will be influenced by economic development, adding that “in fulfilment of the global energy transition agenda, demand for the resource will be greater in developing countries, where a large part of the population still doesn’t have access”.

“Mozambique is well placed to serve the southern African region as well as the Asian and European markets,” he concluded.

The 8th Mozambique Gas & Energy Summit & Exhibition 2023 took place in Maputo on 27 and 28 September under the slogan “Developing Mozambique’s Integrated Sustainable Energy System” and was attended by national and international leaders, who debated various issues related to the current situation and future of the energy industry in the country and the world.
