EDM Studies Entry into Hydrogen-Based Power Generation Sector

Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) is studying entering hydrogen-based energy production, considering that the resource has a “future” in Mozambique. The information was given to Lusa on Thursday (24) by the president of the state electricity company, Gildo Marcelino.

“We are carrying out some studies on the feasibility of using hydrogen for energy production,” said Marcelino, adding that this source “has a future because it is renewable and is considered non-polluting”.

He added that “due to the huge costs that will be required, EDM will only be able to enter the business through partnerships”.

“We certainly favour public-private partnerships when it comes to energy production, because these are huge investments,” emphasised Gildo Marcelino.

In July, the British company Jearrard Energy Resources announced plans to build a 12 gigawatt solar-hydrogen plant in Mozambique.

The project, he estimated, could begin in the first quarter of next year and the infrastructure is expected to produce 4,000 tonnes of hydrogen, helping to meet the growing demand for green energy.
