Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) expects to commence commercial operations on the electricity interconnection line between Mozambique and Malawi before the end of this month, following the completion of ongoing technical testing and validation of the infrastructure.
The announcement was made by EDM Chairman of the Board of Directors, Joaquim Henriques Ou-Chim. "The line has already been energised. We expect commercial operations to begin this month. However, technically, we are still in the testing phase to verify that it is functioning correctly," he said, as quoted by Jornal Notícias.
According to available information, testing began approximately two weeks ago and is expected to last a further week, though the process may be extended should any anomalies be detected that require corrective action before the line enters full operation. Commercial operation represents the final phase of the project's implementation, at which point the infrastructure will transmit electricity on a regular and permanent basis to the power system, following the conclusion of testing, commissioning, and technical validation procedures.
The electricity interconnection between Mozambique and Malawi is regarded as strategically significant for strengthening energy trade between the two countries and for deeper integration of their respective power systems. The project is expected to allow Malawi to access electricity supplied through the Mozambican grid, while reinforcing Mozambique's role in regional energy trade across Southern Africa.
The entry into commercial operation of the line also marks a further milestone in the expansion of electricity transmission infrastructure and the deepening of regional energy integration.
