The Electricity Company of Mozambique (EDM) reported on Thursday 28 December that a total of 5,000 homes are without power in Maputo City, due to a fault affecting ten transformer stations located in the Costa do Sol, Triunfo and Ferroviário neighbourhoods.
“EDM regrets the inconvenience this situation is causing to affected customers and the general public. However, technical teams are on the ground so that the normal supply of electricity to the areas can be restored as soon as possible and we ask that safety measures be observed, taking into account the rain that is being felt in the capital,” the institution said in a statement.
Without detailing the causes of the breakdown, EDM pointed to energy theft and vandalisation of electrical infrastructure as one of the “biggest challenges”, warning that the situation threatens the achievement of the goal of universal access to energy for all Mozambicans by 2030.
In 2022, EDM lost around 41 million meticais as a result of 265 cases of vandalisation.
