EDM and Korean Partner Expand Collaboration, Focus on Innovation

The chairman of the board of directors of Electricidade de Mozambican (EDM), Marcelino Gildo Alberto, and the vice-president of the Global Business Department of the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Chan-Hyuk Chun, signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday 5 June to strengthen cooperation in the areas of electricity production, transmission and distribution, as well as addressing the reduction of energy losses through the implementation of smart meters (AMI).

In addition, the Mozambican delegation checked out KEPCO’s ability to operate electrical systems at all voltage levels by remote control (SCADA). ‘We had the opportunity to see the redundancy of the electrical system, which allows power to be restored in up to 10 minutes in the event of a fault,’ said Marcelino Gildo Alberto. ‘We intend to implement this technology in Mozambique to increase the reliability and availability of energy,’ he added.

According to a statement from EDM, the memorandum also provides for the exchange of experiences in training and technology transfer. During the visit to KEPCO’s human resources training centre, the EDM delegation, made up of the Transport director, Alberto Banze, the director of the Communications and Institutional Relations Office, Stélia Neta, and the technician from the Renewable Energy Directorate, Isac Tsamba, observed the use of advanced technologies in the operation of low, medium and high voltage electricity networks. This exchange of experiences is seen as essential for the modernisation of Mozambique’s electricity infrastructure.

The document states that the memorandum was signed during the Korea-Africa Summit in Seoul, which was attended by African heads of state and government, representatives of multilateral organisations and executives from Korean and African companies. This event facilitated the creation of various co-operation instruments between Africa and South Korea, standing out as an important platform for strengthening bilateral relations.
