Cyclone Freddy: Power Restoration Progressing in Affected Areas

Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) said on Tuesday afternoon that its technical teams were continuing to work in the areas affected by Cyclone Freddy, in order to ensure that safety was guaranteed as soon as possible and that the normal supply of electricity was restored.

According to the company, the rain and flooding caused by the storm have been the biggest obstacle in the work of the technical teams due to the inaccessibility of some locations, which contributes to the delay in restoring the electricity system.

However, EDM said that in Zambezia province power supply has already been restored in the districts of Maganja da Costa, Mocubela, Pebane and Lugela. However, part of Quelimane city, Namacurra, Nicuadala, Licuar, Chinde, Inhassuge, Morrumbala, Mopeia, Luabo and Macuse Administrative Post are still without electricity.

“In Sofala province, electricity has been restored in Caia district. In Manica, power has been restored in the district of Guro. Electricity is still not available in part of the city of Chimoio and Catandica district, affecting 7,500 customers,” the company said.

With the rain still falling uninterruptedly, EDM reinforced its appeal for the observation of prevention and safety measures.

Tropical storm Freddy has so far left ten dead in Mozambique’s central province of Zambézia alone, as well as 14 people injured and 4,000 families affected, or 22,000 people.
