As the 27th global climate conference on climate change kicks off in Egypt, the issue of low-carbon emitting – energy-poor countries in Africa is poised to become one of the hot topics of the event.
The demand of today’s energy-poor countries will need to grow significantly over the coming years. Prioritising funding to support transition in today’s already high emitting countries at the expense of these countries is short-sighted. Mozambique is at the forefront of a number of rapidly developing nations showing real climate leadership and setting out plans to develop and industrialise in a different, less environmentally destructive way than the route followed by already industrialised nations. However they will need support and partnerships to do it.
As the event is being dubbed the ‘African COP’, there’s a growing anticipation around events addressing opportunities and solutions within this scope, particularly in what concerns energy transition.
Mozambique exemplifies the typical low emitting, energy-poor country suffering tremendous consequences from the effects of climate change, yet the country has unparallel resources to develop itself into a key energy transition solution impacting all of Southern Africa.
Next Tuesday, November 8th 15:45 – 16:45 (EGY) Mozambique will be at the centre point of a high-level discussion panel entitled “Mozambique in the Driving Seat of Southern Africa Energy Transition“.
The panel will count on the presence of Mozambican PresidentFilipe Nyusi, Former UK Prime Minister – Tony Blair, AfDB’s CEO – Akinwumi Adesina, Climate Investment Funds CEO – Mafalda Duarte, Deputy US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate – Richard Duke and it will be moderated by CEO and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for all and Co-Chair of UN-Energy – Damilola Ogunbiyi.
The event is supported by the Presidency of Mozambique, The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, the NDC Partnership and Enabel. The discussion will be broadcasted live online directly from the NDC Partnership Pavilion in the Blue zone, Area C, Zone 5, pavilion P126 (Registrations are now open).
