Chinese Firm Invests Over $10M in Solar Panel Factory in Maputo

Chinese company Lumira Moz Energy has broken ground on an industrial manufacturing unit for solar panels at the Beluluane Industrial Park in Maputo Province, with investment exceeding $10 million in the first phase alone.

According to an official statement, the new facility will cover approximately 1.6 hectares and will be developed in two phases. It is designed to produce photovoltaic cells, carry out precision cutting of silicon wafers, and manufacture high-efficiency solar modules.

The project aims to shift a greater share of solar equipment manufacturing to Mozambique, reducing dependence on imported finished products and contributing to the development of a local clean energy supply chain.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Minister of Economy Basílio Muhate said the investment is aligned with the government's strategy of economic diversification and strengthening Mozambique's position in the production of energy technologies and equipment.

"The Lumira Moz Energy project is fully aligned with the government's vision for economic diversification and for reinforcing Mozambique's position as an industrial hub for energy products and technologies," the minister stated. Maputo Province Governor Manuel Tule added that the arrival of the new company strengthens Beluluane's industrial base and demonstrates the region's continued capacity to attract fresh investment.

The Beluluane Industrial Park, managed by MozParks, spans approximately 700 hectares and currently hosts more than 70 companies, which together account for over 10,000 direct jobs across sectors including manufacturing, agro-processing, technology, logistics, and industrial services. MozParks notes that the park's location provides direct access to the N4 corridor, the ports of Maputo and Matola, as well as markets in South Africa and Eswatini.

Lumira Moz Energy Director-General Deng Junfeng highlighted the conditions found for implementing the investment and said the experience could encourage other Chinese companies to establish operations in Mozambique. MozParks reports that it has to date attracted more than 70 companies from 18 countries, with cumulative investment exceeding $4 billion.
