The Mozambique LNG project has completed the installation of solar panels in every home in the village of Quitunda, in the district of Palma, Cabo Delgado province, thereby improving resettled families’ access to a renewable energy source.
According to a project statement, the 643 physically resettled families who have already moved into their homes in Quitunda now benefit from solar energy systems, as part of an initiative aimed at improving the community’s living conditions and reducing electricity costs.
According to the statement, the installation of solar panels is part of measures to support resettled communities, enabling “greater access for families to a more sustainable energy source” and helping to reduce household energy costs.
The village of Quitunda was built to house families affected by the resettlement process associated with the Mozambique LNG project. In addition to solar energy systems, the homes have access to water, electricity from the national grid, and sanitation.
The statement adds that Quitunda also has public infrastructure, including a primary school, a health center, administrative buildings, a market, mosques, a church, recreational areas, a community center with an outdoor amphitheater, and drainage systems.
As part of the resettlement program, the Mozambique LNG project built 657 homes, 643 of which have already been handed over to families following a consultation process involving the communities, local authorities, and other stakeholders.
In addition to the housing component, the project reports that it has been implementing initiatives aimed at strengthening community livelihoods, including the construction of roads connecting fishing zones, agricultural areas, and markets; the distribution of means of independent transportation; programs to support agriculture and livestock farming; the promotion of fishing activities; as well as initiatives to create employment opportunities, small businesses, and technical training.
