Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) is concentrating its efforts on mobilising financial resources with the aim of carrying out the full rehabilitation of the Awasse substation, located in Cabo Delgado province, which was severely vandalised by terrorist groups operating in the region.
The infrastructure, which is crucial for supplying energy to the northern part of the country, was the target of acts of destruction that jeopardised the electricity supply to several districts.
Hermílio Assamo, director of the state company for the customer service area in Pemba, revealed in an interview with Radio Moçambique that the funds to be raised will be used not only to restore the Awasse substation, but also to restore the medium voltage lines that run from it, with the aim of re-establishing and improving the quality of the energy supplied to the affected districts.
The intervention covers a vast area of northern Mozambique, which depends on this infrastructure for the continuous supply of electricity.
The source stressed that the rehabilitation of infrastructure is a priority for EDM, considering the impact that vandalisation has had on the lives of the population and the economic development of the region.
The terrorists damaged not only the substation, but also equipment essential to the functioning of the electricity system, which further aggravated the energy supply crisis.
However, in addition to replacing the vandalised electrical equipment, the institution is evaluating new security measures to prevent future attacks on critical infrastructure. This effort is part of a wider plan by the company to ensure that the areas affected by terrorism can return to normality, with a more robust and resilient energy supply.
With the execution of the planned works and the restoration of the distribution lines, a significant improvement is expected in the quality of the energy supplied to the local population, contributing to the social and economic development of the region, which has been severely affected by the insurgency in Cabo Delgado.
