A delegation of specialists from Sonelgaz, the state-owned company responsible for electricity and natural gas distribution in Algeria, recently carried out a working visit to Mozambique with the aim of transferring Algerian expertise in power generation and energy engineering.
According to Algerian news site Dzair Tube, the visit was in line with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who seeks to strengthen Algeria’s presence in regional energy markets and promote partnerships.
“During the stay, a technical meeting was held between the Algerian delegation and representatives of Mozambique’s energy sector to explore cooperation opportunities, exchange technical knowledge, and assess organizational and operational aspects,” the digital outlet reported.
While in the country, the delegation also visited the Port of Maputo to analyze logistical structures supporting technical operations and toured the Maputo Thermal Power Plant, a strategic natural gas–fired energy facility, to gather insights on operational management best practices.
“This mission highlights Sonelgaz’s key role in implementing Algeria’s national energy policy, facilitating access to international markets, and consolidating its position as a reliable energy partner across Africa,” the report concluded.
Last year, Algeria committed to helping Mozambique expand its domestic gas distribution network, train professionals in hydrocarbon exploration and production, and support the construction of energy distribution infrastructure. The understanding resulted from a series of agreements signed in Maputo between institutions from both countries.
At the time, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Estêvão Pale, explained that the Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos (ENH) signed a memorandum with Algerian oil company Sonatrach that will enable Mozambique to gain experience in production and across the oil and gas value chain. According to the minister, the country needs to “expand the natural gas distribution network for domestic consumption” and develop “industrial projects based on natural gas.”
Sonatrach will also share its expertise in providing services across the oil value chain, including seismic operations, drilling, operation, and maintenance. This collaboration aims to strengthen Mozambique’s technical and operational capacity in the energy sector, benefiting from Algeria’s internationally recognized experience.
Beyond oil and gas, the two countries also agreed to cooperate in health, energy, and business sectors. In the energy field, Estêvão Pale further revealed that an agreement between Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) and Sonatrach provides support in power transmission, the construction and modernization of power plants, and the creation of an industrial park for the production of electrical equipment.
