Mozambican biomedical engineer Nely Áurea Psico has been nominated for the Emerging Professional Engineer of the Year award in the South Australia division of Engineers Australia, the peak body representing the engineering profession in the country.
Psico, 29, was included on a shortlist of six nominees for the category at the Engineers Australia Excellence Awards in South Australia — a distinction that recognises early-career professionals who stand out for technical work, innovation, leadership, and contribution to the profession. The regional ceremony was held on 10 September in Adelaide.
A graduate in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Sydney in New South Wales, Psico currently works as a Remote Service Engineer at Philips Healthcare in Adelaide, where she provides technical support for diagnostic and interventional X-ray systems. These devices are used in hospital units to assist with disease diagnosis and to guide medical procedures in real time.
During her undergraduate studies, the Mozambican engineer served as president of the Women in Engineering Society, an initiative through which she sought to connect students with the engineering sector and create opportunities for engagement with industry. She continues to be involved in profession-related volunteer activities.
Psico also serves as Social Media Coordinator for the Biomedical Engineering College of Engineers Australia and sits on the committee of the Overseas Qualified Engineers group in South Australia, which brings together professionals who completed their training outside the country.
Although nominated in the South Australia division, Psico did not win the category. The regional Emerging Professional Engineer of the Year award was presented to Julian Zheng of Lucid Consulting Australia.
Her nomination nonetheless places her career among the six professionals selected for the distinction in the 2026 edition of the awards.
The full list of nominees in the South Australia division for this category was:
Yu-Han (Alice) Liao – Water Rentals;
Amal Martin – AZZO;
Aliy Pehlivanides – Aurecon;
Nely Psico – Philips Healthcare;
Carolyn Yang – WSP Australia;
Julian Zheng – Lucid Consulting Australia.
