Major US equity indices closed higher on Wednesday, staging a recovery session after the previous day’s losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.56% to 53,061.95 points, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.46% to 7,666.6 points. The Nasdaq Composite gained 0.45%, closing at 26,217.8 points.
Wednesday’s session contrasted sharply with Tuesday’s pessimism, when markets entered September — historically the weakest month of the year for equities — with a sharp sell-off driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East and rising US Treasury yields.
The standout performer of the session was Dell Technologies, whose shares surged nearly 16% after the company reported quarterly results that significantly exceeded Wall Street expectations. Dell posted record revenue of $47 billion in the second quarter of fiscal year 2027, a 58% increase compared with the same period a year earlier. Adjusted earnings per share reached $7.04, more than doubling year-on-year figures.
The growth engine remains insatiable demand for Artificial Intelligence (AI) servers. Dell booked $60.9 billion in new AI server orders during the quarter alone, lifting its total backlog to $95 billion. On the strength of those figures, the company substantially revised its full-year fiscal outlook, raising its total revenue guidance from $167 billion to $192 billion and its AI server revenue forecast from $60 billion to $74 billion.
Uber was also in focus, with shares rising 1.59%. The company announced a sweeping restructuring that includes the elimination of approximately 3,300 positions, equivalent to 10% of its global workforce. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the goal is to make the organisation ‘simpler and faster’, cutting management layers by 20% and reducing the number of so-called micro-teams by nearly half.
Separately, the board of Delivery Hero, the parent company of Glovo, approved Uber’s takeover offer valued at $14.8 billion (approximately €12.77 billion). The deal, priced at €41.50 per share, would dramatically expand Uber’s geographic footprint from 34 to 58 markets, creating a combined platform operating across 99 countries. Uber has committed to maintaining Delivery Hero’s headquarters in Berlin until at least 2029 and to investing €2 billion in Germany over the next five years.
Bond markets remain under pressure. The 10-year US Treasury yield was hovering around 4.78%, near its highest levels since January 2025, while the 30-year yield was trading around 5.25%–5.28%, levels not seen in two decades.
Tensions in the Middle East continued to weigh on crude oil prices. Brent crude, the international benchmark, closed around $95.29 per barrel after briefly surpassing $97 intraday. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was trading between $89.58 and $90.94 per barrel. Oil has gained more than 13% month-to-date and is up more than 42% compared with the same period a year ago.
The geopolitical backdrop continues to cast a shadow over markets. The United States launched a new wave of air strikes against Iran, marking a further escalation of the armed conflict in the region.
