The New York Stock Exchange closed Thursday’s session in positive territory, even after yields on 10-year US Treasury bonds reached their highest level since 2002, briefly surpassing 5.3% during afternoon trading.
New York’s major indices opened the month higher, buoyed by a pullback in Treasury yields and remarks from Federal Reserve officials suggesting a possible pause in interest rate increases. The optimism was reflected in gains across the S&P 500, Dow Jones and Nasdaq, alongside positive performances from companies including Accenture and Micron.
The standout performer of the session was Accenture, which climbed more than 15% after releasing quarterly results that showed revenues above expectations.
Memory chipmaker Micron Technology reported that its net profit surged 895% to US$84.969 billion at the close of its fiscal year ending in September, the US company announced.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.04% to close at 50,927.33 points, the S&P 500 gained 0.25% to 7,670.36 points, and the technology-heavy Nasdaq rose 0.04% to 26,871.60 points.
Wall Street ended the first day of the fourth quarter with slight gains across its three main indices, in a session marked by concern over sovereign debt markets. The 10-year US Treasury note reached its highest level since 2002, driven by a broad global sell-off in government bonds.
