Wall Street Falls as Oil Rises and Strait of Hormuz Fears Persist

Wall Street equities closed lower on Tuesday as investors scaled back optimism over a possible rapprochement between the United States and Iran, while rising oil prices added fresh pressure across major indices.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the session down 0.34% at 53,791.85 points, while the S&P 500 retreated 0.32% to 7,728.20 points. The Nasdaq Composite, more heavily weighted towards technology companies, fell 0.60% to 26,445.44 points.

Market sentiment was shaped by developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, after Iran reiterated that the waterway would remain closed to shipping until its demands are met.

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude advanced approximately 1.5%, surpassing $83 per barrel — a move that heightened investor concern over the potential consequences of a prolonged supply disruption and its implications for inflation.

Pressure on equities was also evident among leading technology companies. Apple fell 1.09%, Alphabet retreated 3.61%, Microsoft lost 0.44%, and Nvidia slipped 0.02%. Meta bucked the trend, rising 0.71%, while Tesla gained 0.58%.

SpaceX declined 3.93%, falling below the price set at its Initial Public Offering (IPO).

In the artificial intelligence sector, Nvidia announced on Monday that it had signed memoranda of understanding with six of the world’s largest asset managers — Apollo Global Management, Blackstone, BlackRock, Brookfield Asset Management, Goldman Sachs, and KKR — to develop a financing initiative aimed at mobilising more than $500 billion for AI infrastructure.

The chipmaker presented the project in a joint panel on CNBC, in an initiative that brings together direct competitors from the financial sector around funding the infrastructure expansion required for the development of artificial intelligence.

Investors are now awaiting US inflation data, with the July Consumer Price Index (CPI) due for release on Wednesday before the opening of Wall Street.

Economists anticipate a moderation in energy-driven price pressures. A softer inflation reading could reinforce expectations that the Federal Reserve (Fed) will not raise interest rates at its September meeting, in a context where markets continue to assess the implications of the weaker employment data released on Friday.

The Producer Price Index (PPI) is scheduled for release on Thursday, providing another closely watched indicator by investors to gauge the trajectory of inflationary pressures and the Fed’s next policy decisions.
