Wall Street Falls Ahead of Fed Interest Rate Decision

New York’s stock exchange closed Tuesday’s session in negative territory, with investors bracing for the Federal Reserve’s decision on interest rates scheduled for Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.63% to 52,092.57 points, the S&P 500 retreated 0.45% to 7,585.34 points, and the technology-heavy Nasdaq lost 0.78% to close at 25,981.57 points.

Markets continued to be weighed down by the same factors that drove Monday’s sell-off. Chief among them was the surge in oil prices, with Brent crude trading at US$108 per barrel following Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia. The Houthis, who control Yemen’s most populous regions and much of the country’s north, declared a naval blockade against Riyadh in July and have since carried out targeted strikes on Saudi vessels in the Red Sea.

Riyadh has closed a key pipeline that allows crude oil to be transported to the Red Sea without transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

Oil prices continued to climb as Saudi Arabia’s East-West Pipeline remained shut. The upward pressure was compounded by Ukraine’s rejection of US President Donald Trump’s claim that he had already reached an agreement with Russia to halt attacks on energy infrastructure.

Government bond yields have been rising sharply, particularly at the longer end of the curve. Sovereign yields across the globe have become a growing source of concern, most notably in the United States, where the ten-year Treasury note reached its highest level since 2007. The 30-year yield climbed more than five basis points to 5.384%, while the two-year yield — more sensitive to monetary policy expectations — advanced around four basis points to 4.68%.
