New York's stock exchange closed Friday's session, 18 September, on a mixed note, with only the Dow Jones finishing in negative territory, in a session defined by market reactions to the Federal Reserve's interest rate increase and mounting pressure on Treasury bonds.
The Dow Jones fell 0.19% to 51,680.74 points, while the S&P 500 gained 0.16% to 7,650.12 points and the technology-heavy Nasdaq advanced 0.40% to 26,522.55 points.
The session was also marked by the simultaneous quarterly expiration of stock options, futures, and index options — a so-called triple witching event that typically drives elevated trading volumes.
Investors were digesting the Federal Reserve's first interest rate increase since 2023, as well as the return of 10-year Treasury yields to the 5% threshold, which added further pressure on equity markets following the Fed's monetary tightening earlier in the week.
Markets continued to monitor oil prices closely, amid supply risks stemming from the closure of Saudi Arabia's east-west pipeline.
