New York's stock exchanges closed Wednesday's session, 23 September, firmly in negative territory, with all three major indices posting losses as surging oil prices rattled global markets.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.68% to 51,512.42 points, the S&P 500 shed 0.75% to 7,706.39 points, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq declined 1.13% to 26,936.04 points.
Markets were weighed down by a sharp rebound in crude oil prices, which had retreated in recent sessions but recovered strongly following an escalation in tensions between the United States and Iran.
Brent crude rose 4.21% to $103.43 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) advanced 2.26% to $92.57 per barrel.
The surge in crude prices triggered losses across global equity markets and pushed up government bond yields in both the United States and Europe.
The rally in oil revived concerns over more persistent inflation. As a direct consequence, investors ramped up bets on additional interest rate increases by the US Federal Reserve, now pricing in two further hikes across the next three monetary policy meetings.
