The Bank of Mozambique (BoM) announced that the Mozambique Stock Exchange (BVM) achieved its highest-ever trading volume in 2024, reaching 34.5 billion meticais (approximately $535.2 million).
According to the Financial Inclusion Report released by the central bank and cited by Lusa, this performance reflects a significant increase in market liquidity, driven by greater participation from institutional investors and stronger buying and selling activity in securities.
“The strong growth observed in recent years demonstrates greater integration of financial markets and increased investor confidence. Last year, we maintained the market’s upward trajectory, with stock market capitalization reaching a new record of 212.4 billion meticais — a 16% increase compared to 2023,” the BoM reported.
The document further notes that this growth reflects the rise in the valuation of listed assets and the diversification of available financial instruments, emphasizing that stock market capitalization as a percentage of GDP also saw a notable increase, reaching 30% in 2024 — consolidating the capital market’s role in financing Mozambique’s economy.
The stock market’s capitalization now equals 30% of Mozambique’s GDP, underscoring its growing relevance in national economic financing.
The Mozambique Stock Exchange aims to expand the number of listed companies to 17 by the end of this year, as part of a strategic plan to reach at least 30 companies by 2028.
According to Pedro Cossa, Chairman of the BVM Board of Directors, “We expect new companies to join, and I believe we will have them soon. A new institution will be announced shortly as the next entrant to the stock exchange,” he stated.
Cossa also emphasized that BVM is developing technological infrastructure to support new trading systems for securities and to enable more funding mechanisms for national projects.
“Mozambicans must have easier access to the stock market. We need to demystify the idea that this market is only for the elite. We must change this perception by making stock trading platforms available on citizens’ mobile phones,” said Cossa.
He added that the new trading system will be integrated with regional stock exchanges:
“This new platform will not only connect with BVM operators but also link to other stock exchanges in the region through interconnectivity projects under the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union, of which we aim to be part,” he explained.
