Oil prices surged more than 3% on Monday, pushing Brent crude above $90 per barrel for the first time in over a month, as escalating tensions between the United States and Iran in the Middle East continued to restrict shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Brent crude, the European benchmark, advanced 3.13% to $86.86 per barrel in morning trade, bringing its monthly gain to 23% — on track for its strongest monthly performance since March. West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the US benchmark, rose 2.74% to $84.75 per barrel.
The United States carried out a ninth consecutive night of strikes against Iran, stating that the attacks targeted a range of military installations, coastal surveillance posts, and communications networks, with the stated objective of degrading Tehran’s capacity to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
The hostilities have resulted in the deaths of three American soldiers in Jordan and Iraq.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced on Sunday that it had intercepted several vessels attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz without authorisation.
