Gold is recovering ground after three consecutive sessions of losses, with a weaker dollar underpinning demand for the yellow metal as it regains appeal as a safe-haven asset.
Bullion was up 1.18% at $4,407.30 per ounce, while silver advanced 1.85% to $66.866 per ounce.
On the geopolitical front, US forces destroyed five Iranian tankers carrying crude oil near Kharg Island — the Islamic Republic’s principal oil export hub — in response to attempted missile attacks on a US warship. The operation heightened fears of a broader escalation in a conflict that has already lasted several months.
Rising crude prices have intensified concerns that higher energy costs could keep inflation elevated, Manav Modi, a commodities analyst at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, told Bloomberg. “The dollar, however, remained under pressure, with the Japanese yen hitting seven-month highs, providing some support to gold,” the analyst said.
Since recovering from a near-$4,000 per ounce low in July, gold has traded in a relatively narrow range around $4,400 as investors assess the outlook for monetary policy in the United States. Fresh inflation data due this week could help clarify the direction the Federal Reserve will take on benchmark interest rates at its meeting next week.
Despite near-term headwinds, many investors continue to position for a gradual rise in gold prices as the metal reasserts its traditional role as a store of value and safe-haven asset.
