Gold is oscillating between gains and losses in Tuesday’s session, 8 September, as rising crude oil prices contribute to widening sovereign bond yields and weigh on the precious metal, while a softer dollar offsets part of that pressure.
The yellow metal is currently down 0.02%, trading at $4,403.370 per ounce, while silver advances 0.22% to $66.305 per ounce.
Traders are focusing on inflationary risks stemming from prolonged disruptions to energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Against this backdrop, markets are pricing in approximately a 60% probability that the Federal Reserve (Fed) will raise interest rates as early as next week.
A more restrictive monetary policy tends to weigh on gold, which bears no yield. Consumer and producer price data from the United States, due for release later this week, are expected to provide important clues regarding the Fed’s likely interest rate decision at its 14–15 September meeting.
“Higher oil prices are keeping inflation concerns alive, so this week’s PPI and CPI data from the US will be critical in determining whether yields continue to rise or pull back,” Christopher Wong of Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp told Bloomberg.
