Asian Markets Rise as Weak US Jobs Data Eases Fed Rate Fears

Major Asia-Pacific indices began the week on a positive note on Monday, 10 August, with Japanese equities leading regional gains as a weakening yen made local assets more attractive to foreign investors. Taiwan’s benchmark index also climbed to its highest level since mid-July.

Asian markets continued to digest last Friday’s US labour data, which came in weaker than expected, easing near-term concerns that the Federal Reserve (Fed) could move to tighten monetary policy further.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 advanced 2.08%, driven in part by a sharp rally in Recruit Holdings — the parent company of recruitment platforms Indeed and Glassdoor — after the firm revised its full-year revenue guidance upward to an equivalent of approximately US$26.6 billion. Recruit Holdings shares surged 23% during Monday’s session.

Sony shares rose 1.24% after the Japanese technology group confirmed it would jointly invest US$6.4 billion with Taiwan’s TSMC to establish a new semiconductor manufacturing facility in Japan.

The broader Japanese Topix index gained 0.62% on the day.

In Taiwan, the main TAIEX index closed up 1.59%, trading at its highest level since 16 July. TSMC, the world’s largest chipmaker, added 0.42%, while rival MediaTek climbed 1.54%.

“The employment data helped ease fears of an interest rate hike,” said Kohei Onishi, investment strategist at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley, as quoted by Bloomberg. “That is leading investors to build up their positions in technology stocks,” he added.

Elsewhere in the region, South Korea’s Kospi rose 0.65%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was up 0.63% shortly before the close, and the Shanghai Composite advanced 0.50%.

European futures pointed to a flat open, with EuroStoxx 50 futures edging down 0.12% ahead of the start of trading on the continent.
