Major Asian indices closed the first trading session of the week with broad gains, driven by semiconductor manufacturers that rose for a sixth consecutive session, in a day when South Korean markets were closed for a national holiday.
In Japan, the Nikkei added 0.60%, while the Topix slipped 0.27%. In China, Hong Kong's Hang Seng advanced 1.65%, with the Shanghai Composite following suit and gaining 1.17%. In Taiwan, the TWSE rose 0.10%.
The regional MSCI Asia-Pacific index climbed approximately 0.30%, supported by listed companies including TSMC, Kioxia, Tencent, and Alibaba.
Technology stocks across the region are showing signs of recovery, following a robust earnings season in the United States. "Tech stocks have strengthened, and the decline in their daily volatility is encouraging investors who had stepped away from the sector to return selectively," Rajeev De Mello of Gama Asset Management told Bloomberg.
In Japan, the benchmark Topix snapped an eight-session consecutive winning streak after data showed that economic growth slowed unexpectedly in the three months to June. The Japanese economy expanded 1.1% year-on-year in the second quarter of this year, decelerating from 1.9% growth in the previous quarter and falling short of market expectations of 2.0%, according to preliminary figures released on Monday.
On the individual stock front, Alibaba gained more than 2.50% in Hong Kong after the company announced an agreement to sell its gaming division and disclosed that its open-source AI model had recorded more than three billion downloads.
