Major Asian indices closed the session split between gains and losses on Thursday, even as strong results from Nvidia bolstered technology stocks and eased investor concerns that the vast capital being deployed to support Artificial Intelligence would not generate near-term returns.
The MSCI Asia Pacific index, the benchmark for Asian equity markets, advanced 0.25% by mid-morning, after having risen as much as 0.6% during the early hours of trading. In South Korea, the Kospi — the country’s main index and one of the key barometers for AI-related trading — jumped 1.20%, driven by gains in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which rose 1.24% and 1.90% respectively.
Nvidia closed its second fiscal quarter with revenues of US$96.22 billion, representing year-on-year growth of 106% and surpassing analyst estimates of US$92.38 billion. Net profits surged 126% compared with the same period in the prior fiscal year, reaching US$59.7 billion, also exceeding market expectations.
“The results further reinforce my optimistic outlook on the AI investment theme and the technology sector broadly,” said Ivan Feinseth, Chief Investment Officer and Director of Research at Tigress Financial. “The Artificial Intelligence infrastructure cycle remains in an early-to-middle phase, rather than approaching a peak,” he added.
Shares in the world’s most valuable company were trading more than 4% higher in pre-market activity, a move that is rippling across semiconductor manufacturers worldwide. Nasdaq Composite futures advanced more than 0.5% in morning trade, while in Europe, the Euro Stoxx 50 was pointing to a modestly higher open, with gains of around 0.25%.
Thursday also marks the start of the US Federal Reserve’s annual Jackson Hole symposium. A speech by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is scheduled for Friday, and investors will be closely monitoring any signals regarding the future of monetary policy in the world’s largest economy.
Among the major Asian markets, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and mainland China’s Shanghai Composite moved in opposite directions, with the former falling 0.32% and the latter advancing 1.02%. Japan’s Nikkei 225 and Topix also diverged, with the more selective index declining 0.23% while the broader gauge gained 0.11%. In Australia, the ASX 200 slipped 0.98%.
