Asia-Pacific Markets Mixed as Samsung Surges 4% on AI Optimism

Major Asia-Pacific markets closed Tuesday’s session with mixed performance, as some investors doubled down on technology stocks while others felt the weight of Monday’s surge in oil prices.

Wall Street ended Monday on a negative note, driven largely by renewed tensions in the Middle East after President Donald Trump issued fresh demands regarding a potential deal with Iran. Investor attention is now turning to the release of the United States consumer price index (CPI) on Wednesday.

“Higher oil prices and a stronger US dollar are weighing on sentiment in parts of the Asia-Pacific region,” said Mohit Mirpuri of SGMC Capital.

Offsetting those pressures, some investors responded positively to an announcement by Nvidia, which formed a partnership with major Wall Street players for a $500 billion financing initiative aimed at building artificial intelligence data centres — a development that boosted shares in companies most exposed to the sector.

South Korea’s Kospi index advanced 0.73%, with benchmark technology stocks Samsung and SK Hynix closing the session up 4.24% and 0.70%, respectively.

Taiwan’s TAIEX also ended Tuesday higher, gaining 0.43%, as shares in chipmaker TSMC rose 0.63%. Japan’s Nikkei 225 and Topix indices were closed for a national holiday.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index fell 0.97% and Shanghai’s Composite declined 0.59%, both in late trading, tracking a more negative trajectory.

“Investors are also relatively cautious ahead of tomorrow’s US inflation data, which should give us a bit more clarity on the Federal Reserve’s interest rate path,” Mirpuri added, as quoted by Bloomberg.
