Uniondale: Ghosts, Mountains and Scenic Roads in South Africa’s Karoo

Situated between the Klein Karoo and the Garden Route in South Africa, Uniondale is a small town encircled by rugged mountains, open landscapes and old farming districts. Approximately 80 kilometres from George, it offers travellers passing through by road a combination of history, nature, traditional cuisine and destinations well removed from the busier tourist circuits.

One of Uniondale’s most enduring attractions is a story that has passed through generations: the legend of its ghost. The tale is associated with Maria Charlotte Roux, a young woman who died in a road accident on 12 April 1968 while travelling with her fiancé between Uniondale and Willowmore. In the years that followed, motorists began reporting encounters with a young woman hitchhiking along the road, who would vanish mysteriously shortly after entering their vehicles.

There is no evidence that the ghost is real, but the story has become part of the town’s folklore and identity. For visitors, it adds a touch of mystery to a road that otherwise cuts through the quiet scenery of the Karoo.

Uniondale can also be explored on foot. The historic town centre, particularly Voortrekker Street, retains buildings in Victorian and Cape Dutch architectural styles. Notable landmarks include the Anglican church and the old police station, which dates to 1891. The town also holds seven buildings or sites recognised as national monuments.

Those interested in history can seek out the remains of British forts constructed during the Anglo-Boer War. Of the five forts built in and around Uniondale to protect the settlement, four remain visible today.

For those drawn to nature, Toorwaterpoort offers gorge scenery and hiking trails. The Kammanassie Mountains dominate the surrounding landscape and are significant for the conservation of species such as the Cape mountain zebra. The area’s nature reserve does not have public hiking trails, however, and visitors are advised to confirm access conditions before planning a trip.

Uniondale also serves as an excellent starting point for a road journey. Prince Alfred’s Pass is one of the best-known routes in the region, connecting the area to the Garden Route and Knysna through mountain scenery. Other routes lead towards Haarlem, Langkloof and Avontuur, with quieter roads around Kammanassie, Warmbad and Barandas. Some are unpaved and may require additional time and care.

The experience can be complemented with a stop at one of the area’s farm stalls, such as Gwerna Farmstall, approximately 20 kilometres from town, or Die Weet Jy Farm Stall. In Uniondale itself, cafés including the African Aloe Café and Alwyn Koffie Winkel offer resting points, while the Plaasmark — held on the last Saturday of each month — provides an opportunity to discover local produce and homemade goods.

Willowmore, around 62 kilometres away, can be incorporated into the route, while Baviaanskloof offers a more demanding adventure, with mountains, rivers, gorges and dirt roads. Part of the Cape Floristic Region, this wilderness area requires careful planning and attention to access conditions.

More than a destination defined by headline attractions, Uniondale draws visitors through its unhurried atmosphere, its landscapes, its stories and the roads that connect it to some of South Africa’s most striking scenery. It is a town best visited without a fixed itinerary, discovered gradually along the way.
