There’s no better way to celebrate love in Africa than by exploring vibrant Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. Whether it’s to mark a special occasion or simply surprise your partner in a memorable way, discover five romantic spots in the city beyond the obvious attractions.
Unity Park
Opened in 2019, the park offers plenty to explore, from historical sites to natural and cultural spaces. There are cafés and restaurants where you can recharge during the day while visiting various attractions, including the endemic black-maned lion.
Unity Park is located within the Grand National Palace, established in 1887, covering an area of 40 hectares. Inside the palace, numerous buildings and plant species have been preserved since the time of Emperor Menelik II.

St. George’s Cathedral
In a country full of religious sites, St. George’s Cathedral attracts couples for its architecture and rich history. Here, you can learn about the Orthodox religion and the lifestyle associated with it.
You’ll also have the opportunity to see where Empress Zewditu and Emperor Haile Selassie were crowned and discover how this church is connected to the Battle of Adwa, a crucial episode in Ethiopian history.

Red Terror Martyrs Memorial Museum
If you are a history enthusiast, the Red Terror Martyrs Memorial Museum should be on your list. Created to honor the victims of this dark period, it is a must-visit site in Addis Ababa to understand the fall of Emperor Haile Selassie and the horrors of life under Mengistu Haile Mariam’s Derg regime.
The museum, founded by a mother who lost her children during the Red Terror, is funded solely by donations. Entry is free, and guides are available to assist visitors.
Photographs and the names of some of the roughly half a million people killed during Mengistu’s regime are displayed on the walls. Exhibits include personal belongings recovered from mass graves, as well as skulls and other human bones. One display, for example, shows a watch given by a man to his wife shortly before being taken away by Derg soldiers.

Mercato Market
Mercato is well worth a visit—and the experience is even better when shared with your partner. Extremely lively, it is considered the largest market in Africa, and for good reason: here you can find practically everything. Strolling through the market just to observe and discover new things is one of the best activities for couples in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Entoto Park
Selected as one of the best destinations in the world, it’s no surprise that Entoto Park ranks among the most romantic places in Addis Ababa. The first of its kind in Ethiopia, it is an adventure space offering breathtaking views of the gorge and surrounding forests.
Perfect for nature lovers, it features a range of activities, from hiking to rope courses and even zip-lining.
