Located on Tunisia’s eastern coast, Monastir is a destination that combines historical heritage, Mediterranean beaches, and a laid-back atmosphere. If you only have two days to explore it, this itinerary brings together the main points of interest, from medieval fortresses and traditional markets to beaches, marinas, and cultural sites.
Day 1: Between the Marina and the Historic Monuments
The first day begins at the elegant Cap Monastir Marina, a vibrant seaside area filled with yachts, cafés, and restaurants. Here you can also arrange boat trips, excursions to the Kuriat Islands, or enjoy activities such as sailing, paddleboarding, diving, and windsurfing. Just a few minutes away is the Habib Bourguiba Mausoleum, one of Tunisia’s most iconic monuments, marked by its golden domes and impressive architecture, dedicated to the country’s first president after independence. Nearby, the famous “I Love Monastir” sign has become a must-visit spot for photos.
In the afternoon, the highlight is the Ribat of Monastir, one of North Africa’s oldest fortresses, built in the 8th century. The climb up to the watchtower offers panoramic views of the medina and the Mediterranean. Inside the complex is also the Ribat Museum, featuring historical artifacts such as coins, ceramics, and astronomical instruments. The tour continues with the Bourguiba Mosque, known for its elegant Islamic architecture, golden mosaics, and large prayer hall, followed by the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions, which houses traditional Tunisian clothing, jewelry, and artifacts.
Day 2: Medina, Market, and Beach
The second day is dedicated to exploring the medina of Monastir, a labyrinth of narrow streets filled with shops selling handicrafts, spices, leather, and ceramics. Here you’ll also find the Bab Brikcha Gate, a well-preserved 17th-century Ottoman gateway decorated with intricate stone carvings. Nearby, the Central Market offers an authentic taste of local life, with stalls selling fresh fish, seafood, fruits, and regional products.
Also in the morning, it’s worth visiting the Palace of Science, a little-known but interesting venue dedicated to educational and cultural activities, especially for families.
In the afternoon, the pace slows down at Qaraiya Beach, the city’s main urban beach, which is ideal for swimming, relaxing, or enjoying water sports. The day ends at El Grotte Café and Restaurant, one of the most popular spots to watch the sunset over the Mediterranean while enjoying light meals and drinks with a view of the sea.

The best time to visit Monastir is between June and September, when the weather is warm and ideal for the beach, although June and September are the most balanced months in terms of temperature and tourist crowds.
Monastir International Festival
Every summer since the 1960s, the city has hosted the Monastir International Festival, one of the oldest in Tunisia, featuring music, theater, and film performances as well as cultural activities held against the historic backdrop of the Ribat.
