Locally known as Sept Cascades or Tamarind Falls, the seven waterfalls of Mauritius continue to attract lovers of nature, hiking, and adventure. Located in the Tamarin River region, near the village of Henrietta, the waterfalls form an impressive sequence of cascades that descend through a mountain gorge before the river flows into flatter areas.
The trail to the waterfalls, located about 11 kilometres from the centre of Curepipe, is considered one of the island’s most popular natural routes. Access can be made by car, motorbike, or by buses connecting cities such as Port Louis and Curepipe to the Henrietta area.
Despite the site’s growing popularity, visitors report that the trails are not always easy to identify. Some paths are partially hidden by dense vegetation, which can lead less experienced hikers onto longer and more demanding routes.
At the main starting point, several local guides offer guiding services to tourists. Although hiring a guide is not mandatory and access to the waterfalls is free, many visitors choose to do so due to the complexity of some trails.
According to traveller reports, guides often highlight the risks of the route, especially in climbing and descending sections near the waterfalls. Some also provide specialised equipment for canyoning and exploring hard-to-reach areas.
Trails lead to different points of the waterfalls
There are at least two main trails starting from the parking area near the main road. One leads to a natural viewpoint near the sixth waterfall, offering panoramic views of the gorge and the remaining cascades. The other takes visitors to a rocky platform near the second waterfall, where a natural pool forms that is popular for swimming.
In addition to hiking, the area has also become popular for activities such as drone photography, canyoning, kayaking, and mountain biking.
Nature and adventure beyond the beaches
Although Mauritius is internationally known for its tropical beaches, places like Tamarind Falls reveal a more adventurous side of the island, marked by mountains, forests, and natural trails.
For many visitors, hiking the seven waterfalls represents one of the most authentic and memorable experiences in the country, combining lush scenery, adventure, and direct contact with nature.
