Argyronisos, The Greek Island That’s up For Sale. Find Out How Many Millions You’d Need to Buy it

Argyronisos, one of Greece’s largest private islands, is officially up for sale – the first time this has happened in several decades. The island is situated in Pteleos Bay, off the northern coast of Euboea in the northern Aegean Sea, and is being marketed by Engel & Völkers through its private office.

In the press release, the price is listed as ‘on enquiry’, but Robb Report and the Greek Reporter suggest that the asking price is around 35 million euros.

What can you get for 35 million?

Argyronisos covers an area of around 24 hectares and has a built-up area of approximately 940 square metres, spread across buildings that have been preserved rather than replaced. There is a main house, a two-storey villa, several traditional houses built of natural stone, a house for the estate manager, and the historic Greek Orthodox Chapel of Saint Anargiri, which gives the island a rare status on the property market: it even has its own place to light a candle.

Surrounding the buildings are centuries-old olive groves, cypress trees, and secluded coves where no one ever passes by—because there’s no one to pass by. The island is powered by its own solar energy system, with an emergency generator serving as a backup, and its management has followed sustainability principles for years. There is also an organic olive grove in production, a helipad, and a dock equipped to accommodate yachts.

How do you get there?

A helicopter flight from Athens International Airport takes about 50 minutes, and from neighboring islands with air service, the trip takes even less time. For those who prefer to keep their feet close to the sea, there’s the option of a private boat transfer from the mainland, with a total travel time from Athens of approximately three and a half hours, including the drive and the crossing.

The location also accounts for part of the interest. Argyronisos opens directly onto the sailing waters of the Sporades archipelago, with Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonissos just a morning’s boat ride away. It is, therefore, a private island with public neighbors whenever you feel like it.

Why is an island like this coming on the market?

For more than six decades, Argyronisos has served as a family’s private retreat, an organic olive oil estate, and, more recently, a venue for wellness retreats. In Greece, most islands are publicly owned or protected, which drastically reduces the number of properties of this type available for sale.

Georg Petras, CEO of Engel & Völkers Greece, sums up the selling point in a rather unsubtle way: in the Mediterranean premium real estate market, buying a home is “a matter of lifestyle,” whereas buying a private island in Greece is “a matter of legacy.” Regarding this specific property, he emphasizes that the luxury of Argyronisos lies not in excessive development, but in six decades of careful stewardship and absolute privacy.
