Sons da Cidade Festival: Celebrating 120 Years of Maputo Port in a Cultural Journey

Lovers of culture, music, and the rich history of infrastructure are in for a treat as the Empresa Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) and the Sociedade de Desenvolvimento do Porto de Maputo (MPDC) join hands to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the Porto de Maputo with an exceptional event – the 1st edition of the “Sons da Cidade” Festival.

The event, slated to take place on August 26th starting at 2:00 PM, aims to celebrate the deep-rooted connection between the bustling city of Maputo and its vital railway and port networks.

CFM and MPDC have ingeniously combined the charm of music and the nostalgia of history in a festival that promises an immersive experience that captures the essence of Mozambican artistry.

To kick off the day of festivities, a morning train journey to Marracuene accompanied by theatre performances and live music is set to captivate attendees. These journeys, meticulously planned to create an unforgettable experience, were made available for free but were quickly snapped up within hours of their announcement on the promoters’ social media platforms.

The centerpiece of the event will be the “Palco Xitimela,” nestled within the CFM station. The stage is set to host a lineup of exceptional artists including Ghorwane, Timbila Muzimba, Radjah Ali, and Mr. Kuka, who will showcase the vibrant tapestry of Mozambican musical heritage. The rhythmic melodies and soulful tunes are sure to resonate with attendees, making “Palco Xitimela” a true celebration of cultural richness.

At the heart of the Trabalhadores Square, the “Palco Mpolwe” stage will play host to a diverse ensemble of artists, including luminaries like António Marcos, Chico António, Wazimbo, and Salimo Momed. Their performances will come together to create the “Show da Grande Família,” a musical extravaganza narrating the century-old history of the Maputo railway and port infrastructure. The artistic direction, helmed by the renowned musician, composer, and producer José Pires, promises a seamless fusion of history and artistic expression.

Adding a heartwarming touch to this celebratory event, all proceeds from the ticket sales, priced at 200 meticais each, will be transformed into essential food items. These items will be donated to social institutions supported by CFM and MPDC, ensuring that the celebration extends its impact beyond the festival grounds and touches the lives of those in need.

As the sun sets over the enchanting city of Maputo on August 26th, the “Sons da Cidade” Festival will not only bring together world-class music and riveting performances but also embody the spirit of unity and cultural heritage that has been intertwined with the Porto de Maputo for 120 illustrious years. It’s an event that promises to leave attendees with a renewed appreciation for the city’s past, present, and future. So, mark your calendars and join in this harmonious celebration that bridges the gap between history, culture, and community.
