Ford has unveiled a militarised version of the Ranger Super Duty 6×6, developed in partnership with General Dynamics Land Systems UK and engineering firm Ricardo. The vehicle combines a 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine producing 209 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque with a hybrid powertrain system.
In the 6×6 configuration, an electric motor mounted at the rear raises total output to 286 horsepower. The vehicle is also available in a 6×4 configuration.
Among the features that distinguish the Ranger 6×6 is its six-wheel system, paired with a chassis based on the Ranger Super Duty — a model developed in Australia and engineered to carry heavier loads. The vehicle also features steel underbody protection, a reinforced transfer case, front and rear differential locks, and suspension adapted for operations on difficult terrain.
In terms of capability, the pick-up offers approximately 300 millimetres of ground clearance and is capable of fording water up to 850 millimetres deep. Towing capacity reaches 4,500 kg, payload stands at 1,982 kg, and the combined gross vehicle weight with trailer can reach eight tonnes.
Inside, the militarised Ranger integrates third-party tactical mission software into its 12-inch infotainment display. Ford has also stated that part of the vehicle’s production and development remains in the United Kingdom, with the turbodiesel engine manufactured in London and the hybrid system produced in Halewood.
According to the Auto Drive website, the vehicle was initially designed to meet the mobility requirements of the British Armed Forces and forms part of a submission for the UK Ministry of Defence’s Light Mobility Vehicles programme. The variant is the result of a project begun in 2023, when Ford and Ricardo jointly developed a six-wheel version of the Ranger equipped with a hybrid system.
The Ranger 6×6 is one of the proposals being considered by the British Ministry of Defence for the renewal of its light vehicle fleet. Other solutions under consideration include the Land Rover Defender Wolf Series II. Ford has not confirmed whether the vehicle will be offered in other markets, nor has it disclosed pricing.
