Yango is set to integrate public transport information into its application in an initiative that could change how passengers consult and plan their journeys across the Maputo Metropolitan Area. The development follows a memorandum of understanding signed with the Maputo Metropolitan Transport Agency (AMT) during the 61st edition of the Maputo International Trade Fair (FACIM).
Under the partnership, Yango’s technology will be used to digitalise information on the public transport network, according to Yango Mozambique’s general director, Mahomed Zameer Adam. ‘In the first phase, the application will make the location of bus stops available, allowing users to consult boarding points directly through the app,’ he explained.
According to the company, stop data has already been provided by the transport authority and the functionality is expected to go live within days.
The second phase of the project foresees the installation of GPS devices on a number of buses. With this technology, passengers will be able to track the location of vehicles, view their respective routes, and obtain an estimated arrival time for buses at any given stop.
The solution is intended to transform the application into a tool not only for requesting rides, but also for consulting information on the various mobility alternatives available across the city.
Yango presents its push into public transport digitalisation as part of a broader strategy to deploy technology in response to the challenges of urban mobility. The company, which is participating in FACIM for the third consecutive time and once again serves as the event’s official transporter, has been expanding the range of services it offers in the country.
‘Passengers will be able to track vehicle locations, view routes, and obtain an estimated time until a bus arrives at a given stop,’ the company said, reiterating the scope of the planned GPS functionality.
Yango’s evolution in Mozambique reflects, according to the company, a strategy that extends well beyond ride-hailing. ‘Through Yango Tech, the technology arm develops solutions for businesses and institutions, including government entities, with the aim of supporting digitalisation processes,’ Mahomed Zameer Adam said.
The company believes the technological capacity built around its platform can be adapted to a wide range of needs. ‘Everything that can be digitalised, we can do,’ the director said, noting that several organisations have approached Yango to develop their own digital solutions. He also acknowledged that other features already available in international markets could reach Mozambique in the future, including food delivery and laundry services, though their introduction would depend on market developments, economic conditions, and the population’s level of digital adoption.
As part of its presence at FACIM 2026, Yango also reinforced its road safety component. At the opening of the event, it conducted a road safety training session for motorcycle partner drivers, with the support of the Municipality of Marracuene, local authorities, and the National Road Transport Institute (INATRO).
Held under the theme ‘Digital and Energy Transformation Towards a Sustainable Economy’, the 61st edition of FACIM brings together companies, investors, institutions, and partners from various sectors. The fair serves as a platform to promote investment opportunities, business, and cooperation between national and international companies.
