Vodacom Is the First Telecom Company in Mozambique With ISO 50001 Certification for Energy Efficiency

In recent years, Vodacom Mozambique has invested in improving energy efficiency in all its markets. The result was the recent achievement of ISO 50001 certification for energy management.

ISO 50001 is an official, globally recognised certification awarded to organisations that demonstrate world-class energy management, helping them to reduce energy consumption by developing an Energy Management System.

To qualify for and maintain certification, organisations need to implement energy management practices comprehensively, which includes setting energy performance targets at senior management level, implementing policies designed to help the organisation achieve measurable objectives and promoting continuous improvement in terms of efficiency across all operations.

‘We are extremely proud of this achievement. Climate change represents one of the greatest challenges of our time, especially for Africa and Mozambique. As a purpose-driven company, we know that our business cannot be done at the expense of the planet and that we need to act now. Achieving ISO 50001 certification is a testament to our commitment not only to environmental sustainability, but also to the continuous improvement of our operational and financial performance. Being among the few companies in Mozambique, and certainly the only one in our sector, to achieve this certification puts us in a position of leadership and responsibility,’ said Simon Karikari, Vodacom’s General Manager.

Most ISO 50001-certified companies report significant energy reductions, with some companies claiming savings of up to 30 per cent.

In difficult economic environments, even small cost savings can have a significant impact on operational efficiency and business resilience, which is imperative for companies to remain competitive and relevant.

Additionally, the benefits include environmental impact. Power generation plays a critical role in climate change, accounting for around 33 per cent of total Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.

This is largely due to the global over-reliance on fossil fuels as a means of production, such as coal, which makes the energy sector and energy use habits a priority for reform. Since the industrial age, GHG emissions have increased alarmingly, largely due to the growing need for energy use.

Vodacom invests in energy efficiency initiatives, which include purchasing more efficient network equipment, reducing demand by installing lower power cooling technologies, and reducing energy use by decommissioning and upgrading old equipment. Investment in this programme has led to a 26% reduction in our energy intensity from fiscal year 2023 to 2024.

‘As an organisation operating in Africa, we are deeply aware of the impact of climate change on our customers. We have seen and felt the impact of climate-related natural disasters and recognise the need for sustained and improved action to bring about meaningful change. Energy efficiency initiatives are key to helping us decarbonise society,’ said Kees van Peer, Vodacom’s CTO, about this certification, achieved by all the markets in which the group operates.
