5G: Vodacom Provides Free Internet in Maputo

Vodacom Mozambique has invested more than 25 million meticals in implementing a project to provide free Wi-Fi Internet access at 5G speed in some public squares in Maputo city.

According to a statement from the institution, the initiative was implemented in collaboration with the National Communications Institute of Mozambique (INCM) and the Universal Access Service Fund (FSAU) and aims to empower citizens to exploit digital opportunities for education, business and community involvement.

The high-speed Internet service is available at Maputo Airport, Zona Verde Secondary School, Tunduro Garden, Ronil Shop, Fish Market, Youth Square (Magoanine) and Praça dos Engraxadores. This measure aims to combat the digital divide by making online resources more accessible to everyone.

Overcoming the digital divide with 5G

The project allows users to connect to the Internet in two one-hour sessions per day, making the most of the fast and efficient 5G network, and aims to cover high-traffic community areas to ensure widespread benefits, from students to local business owners.

A vision for digital empowerment

The CEO of Vodacom Mozambique, Simon Karikari, emphasised the aim of the project: ‘We are excited to launch this initiative, a step towards our commitment to reduce the digital divide in Mozambique. Providing free 5G Internet access is not just about connecting, but empowering individuals to explore the possibilities of the digital world for their advancement and economic development.’

This initiative ‘represents a major advance towards digital inclusion in Mozambique, promising to increase educational, economic and social opportunities for the citizens of Maputo.’
