YouTube will ban ads related to gambling, alcohol, drugs, as well as political and election-related ads from the header, or the banner displayed at the top of the site or app.
“We believe this update, which will build on the changes we made last year to the header, will lead to a better experience for our users,” a spokesperson for Google, which owns YouTube, explained in a statement sent to CNN Business.
This is the second major change in less than a year to YouTube’s header policies, after in November the platform banned advertisers from reserving that space for a full day.
YouTube’s policies have come under intense scrutiny in recent years, particularly around its approach to misinformation and hate speech.
The video service was one of three platforms that last year agreed to an external audit of its policies against harmful content, in addition to Facebook and Twitter.
