The Swedish ambassador to Mozambique, Andrés Jato, and the rector of Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), Manuel Guilherme, have signed a new cooperation agreement valued at US$4.3 million to strengthen scientific research capacity and support the transformation of the Mozambican institution through 2028.
According to a statement released by Club of Mozambique, the agreement marks the 11th consecutive phase of research cooperation between Sweden and UEM, dating back to 1978, reaffirming a partnership that has played a significant role in advancing higher education.
“Over nearly five decades, the partnership has supported the training of approximately 180 PhD holders and 250 master’s graduates among UEM faculty. These collaborations have contributed to the establishment of master’s and doctoral programmes, as well as strengthened essential research infrastructure,” the statement said.
The new programme aims to improve conditions for high-quality research, supporting UEM’s efforts to become a sustainable university in line with its Strategic Plan (2018–2028) and Institutional Reform Agenda. “We foresee improvements in information and communication technology systems, library services, internal quality assurance, and staff training in research management.”
“Sweden remains a proud strategic partner of UEM in advancing research and higher education in Mozambique,” said Andrés Jato, adding that over the years both sides have built lasting relationships connecting researchers and institutions committed to finding solutions to Mozambique’s challenges.
The agreement will run from 1 July 2026 to 31 December 2028 and supports UEM’s collaboration with three Swedish institutions: the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Stockholm University, and Uppsala University’s International Science Programme. It also includes partnerships with Makerere University (Uganda), Stellenbosch University, and the University of Cape Town (South Africa).
