South Africa’s Department of Science and Innovation has launched a multi-million dollar investment to develop nano satellites (satellites weighing between 1 and 10 kg). The investment is aimed at providing communication services targeted at the maritime industry.
The department has called for strategic and coordinated surveillance in its coastal waters, particularly maritime movements within the country’s exclusive economic zones. The investment involves supporting programs in space engineering, infrastructure, human capacity development, and other technological innovations, while also aiming to aid in the country’s economic recovery.
Valued at R18.9 million, the investment will be implemented by the Technology Innovation Agency with the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, an institution that plays a key role in the growth of space science and technology in South Africa.
