South African startup Platybooks has launched an invoicing, quoting, and client management platform that enables small businesses to automatically convert an accepted quote into an invoice with an embedded card payment link.
When a client accepts a quote on the platform, an invoice is automatically generated and sent in PDF format, compliant with South African tax legislation requirements, alongside a card payment link. Transactions are processed through Paystack, with funds transferred directly to the business's bank account.
Once payment is made, the invoice is automatically marked as paid. If payment is not received, the system dispatches automatic reminders. Platybooks also offers client management features, a product catalogue, credit notes, recurring invoices, deposits, team profile and permissions management, and brand customisation tools.
For founder Ché Overmeyer, the key gap in the market is not the absence of invoicing solutions, but the disconnect between invoice issuance and payment processing. "Xero, Zoho, and QuickBooks require you to bolt on a payment gateway afterwards. Platybooks issues the invoice and the card payment link as a single solution," he said.
The startup generates revenue through subscriptions and offers four pricing plans tailored to the South African market. Currently self-funded by its founders, the company is in a user-testing phase. According to Overmeyer, Platybooks is preparing its first funding round, which will be directed primarily at distribution and platform expansion rather than product development. "I have a complete product and no audience, and that is the gap that capital can fill," he explained.
At this stage, the company is focused on the South African market, but Overmeyer believes expansion into other African countries could be facilitated by Paystack's presence in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda. The strategy is to first consolidate the model in South Africa before replicating it in other markets.
Platybooks was founded in 2023 under the name Invoiceer. Before moving into software development, Overmeyer worked as a photographer and tour operator. He has cited administrative management as one of the core challenges in both fields, particularly the need to track invoices and payments across multiple tools.
"In both businesses, the part I found most difficult was keeping track of all my invoices and payments, spread across Excel spreadsheets, InvoiceTemplate.docx files, and banking app statements," he said.
