Paystack, the digital payments fintech, has launched a solution in South Africa that allows merchants using Shopify to accept card payments directly at checkout, without redirecting customers to an external page.
The feature is designed to simplify the purchasing process by eliminating a step between product selection and payment completion. The launch comes ahead of Black Friday, a period during which merchants anticipate a surge in demand and seek to minimise barriers to completing sales.
“Businesses invest a great deal to bring a customer to checkout. Payment should be a natural part of that experience,” said Thomas McKinnon, Paystack’s head of operations in South Africa, adding that the solution allows merchants to accept card payments within the checkout environment that customers already know.
According to the company, the new feature is already delivering positive results for some merchants. Mario Tuscano, managing director of AskMario, an agency that works with Shopify-based businesses, said some of his clients had recorded “a conversion increase of up to 15% from this feature alone”.
Beyond online checkout, Paystack announced an integration between Paystack Terminal — its device for in-person payments — and merchants’ Shopify accounts. The link allows payments made in physical stores to be associated with the platform used to manage online sales.
“Our merchants serve customers online and over the counter, often at the same time. Connecting Paystack Terminal to Shopify brings those two sides of the business closer together,” said Mechiel Couvaras, senior account manager at Paystack South Africa, highlighting the integration’s value during peak trading periods.
Together, the two solutions allow merchants to manage payments across online and physical channels from their respective platforms, consolidating multiple points of sale into a single system.
