Facebook has created a new application to hold work meetings through virtual reality, Horizon Workrooms, where users can meet remotely in a virtual space with avatars.
The technology giant intends, with this new application, to attract users of virtual meetings.
The necessary equipment (headset, virtual reality glasses) will cost 300 dollars and weighs half a kilo.
People who do not have this device may participate in the meetings through a video call.
Up to 50 people will be able to be in these meetings, but only 16 will be able to participate in the virtual reality space with avatars.
To get the full virtual reality experience, users need to have a Facebook account.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is one of the enthusiasts of the ‘metaverse’, a vague concept that encompasses augmented and virtual reality with new forms of communication.
Zuckerberg hopes this will be a new way for people to use the internet.
Virtual reality never caught on, even during the confinement due to the covid-19 pandemic, when telecommuting became a ‘new normal’ for millions of workers and made apps like video conferencing platform Zoom an everyday name.
