Facebook will begin displaying a label on posts about climate change that directs users to an information page on the topic, with the aim of combating misinformation.
For now, the measure will only be implemented in the UK. But the plan is to expand access to the tool to other countries “soon”, revealed the company yesterday, quoted on the page of the Portuguese electronic newspaper Observador.
The operation of this mechanism will be made from the Climate Science Information Center of Facebook, which provides users with news and scientifically proven information and additional resources of the main organizations involved in the discussion about the climate crisis. This center was initially launched in September in France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, but from now on will also be available in Belgium, India, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Ireland, Mexico, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Spain, South Africa and Taiwan.
In recent years, Facebook has come under pressure to implement fact-checking on climate change and prevent the spread of false content, and has even received criticism from US lawmakers.
“The future of our planet is at stake and no company should be too big, powerful or opaque to be held accountable for its role in the climate crisis. Facebook is no exception,” several senators pointed out in a statement released last year, as recalled The Verge recalls.
