OpenAI has officially unveiled Codex, a cloud-based Artificial Intelligence (AI) coding assistant designed to take over repetitive and technical tasks in the daily routine of software engineers, such as debugging, testing, and code review.
The tool, previously available to ChatGPT Pro, Team, and Enterprise users, aims to free developers to focus on more creative and strategic problems. According to the Sapo portal, designed to function as a virtual “junior colleague,” Codex interprets commands in natural language and acts collaboratively, explaining each step of the process and promoting continuous learning for users. The tool is powered by a specialized version of the codex-1 model, specifically tuned for engineering workflows. One of Codex’s distinctive features is its safe and isolated environment, with parallel task execution and the use of AGENTS.md files to ensure clear and controlled protocols, which prevents risky code changes and guarantees traceability.
Companies like Cisco, Superhuman, and Kodiak are already testing Codex within their development teams, using it for test automation, code cleaning, and boilerplate generation. OpenAI itself already integrates it into its internal workflows.
