Google has announced a new feature for Gmail that creates personalized responses based on users’ writing habits and saved information from other products linked to their account. The new functionality, called “Personalized Smart Replies,” was unveiled during the I/O conference on Tuesday (20th).
The feature is part of a suite of tools related to Gemini’s “personal context” assistant, in which AI can sync data from platforms like Docs, Gmail, Drive, and Sheets to answer specific questions. The company states that all personal information is protected and cannot be accessed by third parties.
During the presentation, CEO Sundar Pichai demonstrated a practical example: upon receiving an email asking for travel tips from a past trip, instead of generating a simple text response with AI, Gemini can identify emails and files in Drive and Docs related to the topic. It can select booking receipts, itineraries, and spreadsheets connected to the main subject of the email. The assistant then drafts a message that preserves the user’s writing style and even imports data from other platforms to enrich the response. The final decision is always left to the user, who can edit the draft or send it to the recipient.
According to Google, personalized replies will be available to subscribers of paid Gemini services, such as Workspace and Gemini Advanced, starting in the third quarter of this year, between June and September. According to The Verge, the feature will initially launch in English only.
