Zambezia: Authorities Report More Than a Thousand People Affected by Rain Last Week

A total of 1080 families have been affected by the rains registered last week in Zambezia province, central part of the country.

According to data from the provincial emergency operation centre, at least 500 people were removed from the risk areas in Maganja da Costa district due to the increase of the Licungo river flow in the last days. Across the province, 519 houses have been partially destroyed and 324 completely devastated.

The information was shared during a meeting called by the Secretary of State in the province, Judite Mussácula, whose purpose was to assess the level of readiness of the authorities in case of need of rescue and assistance to affected families in Zambezia.

At the time, Judite Mussácula said that the Secretary of State is available to work with the Governments of the districts in withdrawing the population from the risk areas, in order to avoid situations of loss of human lives in case of occurrence of extreme rains.

“We have already removed 500 people from Licungo and we will continue to work with all the district governments to monitor the situation,” said Judite Mussácula.

Zambezia province is under alert following the formation of a tropical storm northeast of Madagascar. So far, 260 risk management committees have been activated across that territory, as Nelson Ludovico, delegate of the local National Institute for Disaster Risk Management (INGD), made known.

“The current projections of the meteorological system have the potential to evolve into tropical pressure from this Tuesday until the 18th of the current month,” the INGD delegate said.

However, according to the same source, it is “still premature to say that this system may affect the Mozambique Channel, and the monitoring process for subsequent updates is ongoing.
