World Bank Provides Additional $700M for Intervention in Cabo Delgado

The World Bank has made available to the government of Mozambique, an additional funding of 700 million dollars for the intervention in the humanitarian crisis caused by terrorism.

The information was provided by the World Bank vice president for Africa, Hafez Ghanem, in France, in an interview granted to Mozambican journalists after his meeting with President Filipe Nyusi.

The World Bank approved in April, Mozambique’s eligibility to benefit from its Prevention and Resilience Allocation (PRA) instrument, “unlocking up to $700 million in funding to prevent the escalation of conflict and build resilience in Mozambique.”

Upon the announcement of the funding in Cabo Delgado province in April, the World Bank immediately made available a $100 million International Development Association (IDA) grant in support of the Crisis Recovery Project.

In addition to improving basic services, such an initiative, says the Bank, is aimed at “restoring livelihoods and creating economic opportunities … as well as rehabilitating selected public infrastructure designed to benefit internally displaced persons and host communities in specific areas of the north of the country.

“The operation will support “the government as it intensifies its direct assistance to IDPs and host communities and deploys its strategy to prevent escalation of the conflict while building community resilience,” Idah Z. Pswarayi-Riddihough, World Bank country director for Mozambique, Madagascar, Comoros, Mauritius and Seychelles, said in April.
