“Unemployment May be Related to Bad Quality in Training” – Filipe Nyusi

The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, said that the lack of employment may be related to the quality of training, having also pointed out that unemployment is not solved only with oil and gas courses.

The Head of State believes that it is wrong to think that oil and gas courses, widely introduced in universities, are the solution to the employment problem in the country. In his opinion, it is necessary to diversify the areas of training.

“Now there is a disease of thinking that oil and gas courses are the ones that will solve employment problems. No. Beware!”, he warns and exemplifies that, while many people focus on these courses, “there are people who are making money doing our activities. I was just in Mueda, where a young man bought a bread machine and is seriously selling bread, while others are discussing going to Afungi, in search of job opportunities in the gas projects,” cites O País.

Speaking during the opening of the international conference on the 60 years of higher education in Mozambique and Angola, Filipe Nyusi said that companies need a guarantee of quality cadres.

“The problem of employment, sometimes, is even because we are irrelevant. When someone is trained and is relevant, they are often in demand. When we offer a product that is not wanted, we have to think about it,” he says, mentioning that, time and time again, there are companies that leave people trained in the country to look for professionals from other countries.

For the head of state, the academic titles should reflect the quality of the training. “We have trivialized the Doctorate. A Doctor should look like a doctor when he expresses himself. And this expression is shaped by knowledge acquired over a long period of time.

The President of the Republic challenges the universities to rethink the teaching model, seeking to explore information and communication technologies, even because this ‘rethinking’ will depend on money, therefore – the President adds – the academies must reinvent themselves to be sustainable.

The International Conference on 60 years of higher education in Mozambique and Angola started this Wednesday, June 29, and ends on Friday, June 1.
