US President Donald Trump has declared that negotiations with Iran are taking place ‘at this very moment’, despite Tehran’s denial, insisting the talks represent ‘the last chance’ for the country to reach a favourable agreement.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Monday, Trump said the contacts were being held ‘at the request’ of Tehran and with the ‘support’ of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar.
‘This is the last chance the Iranians have to sign a good deal,’ he stated.
According to Trump, the talks are focused in particular on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which he suggested could happen ‘as early as tomorrow’. Earlier, the US president took to his Truth Social platform to criticise what he called the ‘incredible duplicity’ of Iran’s leadership.
‘They ask for a meeting (…), talks begin, more are scheduled for the immediate future, and they say — publicly and proudly — that there are no discussions,’ he wrote.
Trump had threatened days earlier to strike the Islamic Republic ‘hard’ before announcing the suspension of plans for large-scale bombardments — a fresh reversal in a period marked by weeks of alternating threats and negotiation announcements.
Iran’s response came during the Foreign Ministry’s regular weekly press briefing. ‘We are not negotiating with the United States of America at this time. We are negotiating with Oman to secure passage through the Strait of Hormuz,’ said Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei.
The day before, Baghaei had spoken of an imminent agreement with Oman to reopen the strategic waterway, which is critical to global hydrocarbon trade and has been effectively blocked since the collapse of a memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran in early July.
Iran, which rejects a return to pre-war conditions, is currently permitting only a limited shipping route along its coastline. Oman, whose sultanate angered Tehran in June by opening an alternative route, has not issued a public statement.
‘We are close to reaching an agreement on a route acceptable to both sides — neither the northern route nor the southern route — that respects the sovereign rights of each country while safeguarding our national interests and security,’ Baghaei said on Sunday.
Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz remain elevated. British maritime security agency UKMTO reported that a cargo vessel was struck by an ‘unknown projectile’ overnight from Monday into Tuesday, with no casualties or immediate damage recorded.
